Augmented reality veterans Metaio announce some details about their upcoming insideAR Conference to be held 26-27 September in Munich, Germany. Whereas the list of speakers for the event has been available since July, more topics for Conference updates via press release today. This theme is: "from vision to the road map.
To illustrate this case ad, Metaio release video that shows small scale demo their vision of "Augmented City". This demo was created by Metaio and Media Division processing ARM — the creators of the Mali family essential for software rendering abilities Metaio in the SE.
Demo is cool and a good illustration of their vision, but it is important to note that strategically, the focus event insideAR also seems to be linked to identify their road map for achieving that goal. This information will be available publicly, as well as in more detail with select business partners during the second (and private) day of the Conference insideAR.
If you ever need technology road map for usability, it's augmented reality. I mean, I'm one of the believers, but in many conversation about AR with colleagues and clients, the conversation often strays to "Yes, but how this will actually achieve" or "How do we get from a to B". This legitimate questions.
Therefore, a simple format for sharing the vision, but also the exchange of practical, tactical and technical steps to achieve the vision seems clean and clever way to split the content and try to deliver practical results. I plan on attending and will let you know if the concept lives up to the hype.
But back to the Augmented city demo ...
It looks cool, but I admit at first I thought it might be a bit gimmicky. I mean, what is this tiny city? What he is trying to show?
In this video I think Metaio technical director Peter Meyer does a good job of explaining the roll of the hardware and software to create best-in-class AR experience and also describe how optical character recognition (OCR) Metaio's (for which they are the leaders) will experience.
Therefore, after viewing in its entirety, I began to see where they're headed with both vision and technology. Instead of viewing it as an animation or cartoon, I imagine some of the real scale of the city and itself in this city and is meta information at your fingertips. I started to provide some real life scenarios of my own:
What if I worked in the architecture of the firm and the virtual façade of our buildings can be changed at the most famous designs company? what should I do if I worked at an advertising agency where customer videos can be displayed on the walls of the building? what should I do if the new generation of car ads actually went on the road (and probably legal or compliance nightmare but cool nonetheless). There are many possibilities, if practical obstacles may be bailed out or removed. Let's hope that practical approaches can be found for these "natural" AR experiences without the vast majority of users.
This seems to be one of the goals of an insideAR approach Metaio. This is a good idea to try to show vision and action, and that seems more realistic than the typical "whizz-bang-look-how-cool-my-tech-is" approach to attention for marketing reasons. My fingers are crossed.
